Just Wing It

This post is about a cultural experience in Tenerife.

I bet most of you don’t know this place and that’s fine. I didn’t know anything about it until I bought my plane ticket. I know that sounds dumb, but I was currently living in Scotland and decided to take a spontaneous solo trip. The best way to do that was to take hop on the cheapest flight out of the UK. A couple nights before my flight, I booked my hostel and started researching what I was going to do while I was there. I ended up finding out that this island is one of the most incredible places on this planet. To list a couple reasons, it has an incredible Spanish culture, hiking around a towering volcano that created the island, and is one of the best places for adventure sports like rock climbing and kitesurfing.

I love rock climbing (I'm really not even good) and set my mind on being able to find a way to go. After hours of researching and not finding anything even remotely cheap, I had an idea. Why don’t I find friendly people through Facebook to take me? I got on Facebook and searched “Rock Climbing in Tenerife” and found a few people who had recently posted pictures of climbing. I messaged around 4 or 5 guys telling them I didn’t have much, but would pay them to take me climbing the upcoming weekend. The next day I got a response from one guy named Georgi. He told me he hadn’t planned on going, but would be down if I paid him a little. We set an extremely cheap price and then he set a time when he would pick me up from the hostel.

I know…. Most of you are thinking this guy is going to murder me. But keep in mind, I messaged him and was playing it safe by giving friends his facebook page and website. The second day I was in Tenerife, he picked me up. He was such a nice guy and had the entire day planned out for us. He was driving me around the whole island; showing me his favorite lookouts, hiking places, the volcano, and then climbing after. It was incredible. I’m not telling this story to have you guys go get kidnapped by random people I promise... I’m telling you this story because I want you to have unbelievable experiences like this. Go get what you want while traveling. There is ALWAYS a way! You might have to get out of your comfort zone a little and talk to some random people, but it will definitely be worth it when you have a weekend like this!
