If you've been working remotely lately, you may be looking for a responsible and adventurous way to shake up your normal WFH routine. If you're looking to work remotely from somewhere new and closer to nature with a group of like-minded people, you're looking for a TWC Remote Work Experience!

Each month we invite a small group (8-12 people) to join us in a different location around the world to live, work, and explore for the month. Those looking to join should have the ability to work remotely for at least a few weeks (remote job, freelancer, startup project, etc). Outside of work, we adventure together (learning new languages, hiking, surfing, scuba diving, biking, road-tripping) and seeing new places. These months differ from our usual Group Trips by being about living in these destinations, so you have all the flexibility and independence you could want each day (but also an inspiring group to be with when you do want the company).

  • The activity level of the Acatenango add-on trip is high. The terrain on the hiking days is strenuous, steep, and at a high-altitude. However, these trails are generally considered accessible to most healthy travelers with the proper preparation. Good shoes for hiking will be needed, but travelers will not be required to bring any other hiking or camping equipment. Everyone reacts to altitude differently, regardless of fitness and age. For details on how to best prepare and what to do in the event you are affected during the trip, please consult your physician.

NEXT STEPS

A deposit of $650 is required during the sign-up process, which goes towards the overall cost of the trip. From there, you can opt into a monthly interest-free payment plan, which can be easily managed from your trip account you'll be guided to create while signing up.

Prepare for your departure. Your confirmation email will contain information on how to schedule your pre-departure call, how to join the group message for your month(s), and where to access the materials to prepare for your trip.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it normal to come solo?

Yes! One of the best things about TWC is that we prioritize community, and our groups tend to get close quickly. There's always someone down to go on an adventure with you.

Can I stay for less than a month?

These packages cannot be pro-rated for less than the 1-month (28 nights) stay. You can stay for less than 28 nights, but the cost will be the same. In our opinion, these deals are so good that they are worth it even if you stay less than a month. Additionally, if you don't arrive on day one and depart on day 29, you may not be guaranteed airport transfers.

What is the bathroom situation?

The private room has a private ensuite bathroom.

Can I share a room?

Yes, 2 people can split any of the private rooms and split some costs that way. The Standard Private Rooms come with one double or queen bed. However, there are different prices for people splitting a room, which are listed above. This is so that the second person can have all of the extras that come with the package that would typically only apply to 1 guest. TWC typically can't match people with random roommates.

Please note that having guests stay in your room without having them join the TWC group goes against TWC guidelines.

Do I need to be working to attend one of these trips?

These trips are intended to be for people working full-time, self-employed, or in school. We ask people not to sign up if they do not intend to be doing one of the above. If you want to take a trip, we offer group trips for people taking time off and custom trips

Is the Wifi strong enough for video calls?

Yes, the co-working spaces are intended to be used by people working full-time. Most travelers who join our RW months are busy with calls, meetings, etc. There is a separate Wifi network specifically for the co-working space.

Are guests allowed?

If someone visits who is not signed up for the TWC Remote Work month, there is a nightly guest fee of $35, and the maximum number of nights a guest can stay is 4. These guests will not have access to the co-working space, wellness classes, the group message, pre-departure information, the weekend trip, etc. TWC can't arrange any travel or tours for people who are not part of the TWC group.

Will I receive travel preparation guidance and advice?

Yes! Included in the monthly package is online information to help you prepare for your trip to your specific location(s), including a detailed packing list and information on culture, weather, health, safety, and emergencies, a 1-hour pre-departure call with TWC to further go over the preparation information regarding entry requirements, travel insurance, phone data, currency, general safety, and more, correspondence with TWC via email for any questions and concerns pre-departure, and TWC Host at your destination (note that the Host is not a tour guide).

Do I need travel insurance?

Each traveler will have to purchase travel insurance of their choosing that fits specific requirements. Exploring travel insurance policies could give you more peace of mind. The travel insurance requirement is one topic that we discuss in our pre-departure calls with Remote Work Experience travelers.

What is the cancellation policy?

The initial deposit is always non-refundable. If the cancellation is 180 days or more prior to the trip departure date, the initial deposit is still owed. If the cancellation is between 180 and 90 days prior to the trip departure date, 50% of the total trip cost is still owed. If the cancellation is 90 days or less prior to the trip departure date, 100% of the total cost of the trip is still owed. If the cancellation is during the trip dates, 100% of the total cost of the trip is still owed.

How long will these packages be available?

TWC Remote Work Experiences are now a staple TWC service that we offer several times a year!

Does the package come with the remote job?

Unfortunately, no, those looking to join should already have the ability to work remotely for at least a few weeks (remote job, freelancer, startup project, etc). However, we do have many suggestions on ways to make money online over on our Blog.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies?

TWC is happy to accommodate dietary requests to the best of our abilities. It's essential to us that everyone is comfortable! A specific question during the signup process for each trip asks the traveler to note any dietary requests, allergies, etc. Please reach out to discuss your specific dietary restrictions, as the alternatives offered depend on the exact trip. We can accommodate vegan and vegetarian diets on every trip.

Is this trip only for Americans?

The trip is open to everyone, regardless of nationality. We've had travelers from many different countries join us, and we wouldn't have it any other way. If you have any questions about whether or not you'll need a visa to visit a specific country, please make a note while signing up.

Is there an age limit?

This trip is planned for ages 18-45.

Do travelers with American passports need a visa to visit Guatemala?

No.

What is the weekend of activities around Lake Atitlan?

Day 1 (Saturday): Set out on an included boat tour of Lake Atitlan with a local guide. The group will visit different towns around the lake to learn about Mayan culture and handicrafts, see how each village is known to be unique, and take in amazing scenery all day long. The group will take an included lunch with volcano views at an education center that provides opportunities for local youth to learn new skills, including culinary classes, to provide opportunities for many generations. Next up, the group will enjoy an included happy hour with desserts at one of the most unique restaurants in the world that can only be accessed by boat. Lunch is included.

Day 2 (Sunday): Another day spent on the lake! The group will have another private and included boat ride to two more towns on the lake. At the first town, San Antonio Palopo, the group will have the option to join a ceramics-making class and social project. In the highlands of Guatemala, years of volcanic eruptions and geology created exposed channels of clay in the rivers. The ancient Mayans made use of this clay to produce high-quality ceramics. Today many local families continue to produce beautiful ceramics, and that income in part supports the village. Each traveler who elects to create their own piece will pay directly to the workshop and their creation will be fired and delivered to the hotel to take home in exchange for a donation. Next, the group will visit San Marcos, a town with a nature preserve on the lake for swimming, restaurants, shopping, etc. If you're interested in a spa visit or yoga experience, the town is famous for these things, so they are great optional activities to ask about.
